TransMonEE Analytical Series Where We Live and Learn: Violence against children in Europe and Central Asia
Violence affects children’s emotional, cognitive, and physical development, with long-lasting consequences throughout their lives. The new UNICEF report shows that two out of three children in Europe and Central Asia experience some form of violence at home, at school, or in their communities.
The report highlights that one in three children is subjected to physical punishment, while two in three experience psychological aggression. Although most parents do not view violence as a necessary method of discipline, stress, lack of support, and limited awareness of alternatives contribute to the continued use of such practices. Psychological violence, often overlooked, can be just as harmful to a child’s development as physical punishment.
For legislation to have a real impact, governments must invest in prevention, parental support, child protection services, and effective data collection systems. Through this report, UNICEF calls for immediate and coordinated action to end violence and ensure that every child grows up in a safe and protective environment.
